Designing accessible toilets in modular buildings
An accessible toilet must work for wheelchair users and people with a wide range of needs. Getting the layout right at design stage is essential.
Space
Allow enough room for a wheelchair to turn and for side transfer to the WC. Doors should open outward or be wide enough not to block the space.
Fittings
Grab rails, a basin within reach of the WC, lever taps, a contrasting colour scheme and an emergency assistance alarm are standard.
Approach
Level or ramped access, firm paths and good external lighting matter as much as the room itself.
Changing Places
Larger venues may consider a Changing Places toilet, with a hoist, adult changing bench and more space.
